“Gun store, liquor store, gun store… Where the fuck you taking me!?!” -Dave Chappelle (Killing Em’ Softly)April 12, 2006My 3 cabinmates were far lamer than the ones from my other long train trip, so I drank in the bar car by myself and bit my nails until I was drunk enough to pass out. My dad bit his nails too, and I’ve always been extremely embarrassed of the habit as a result. It’s just so hard to quit a drug you grow yourself.

“Be a fool. For love. For yourself.” -BourdainI was done with buses after my previous experience, Caroline knew that. So, even though it was a short trip, we opted for the train. We sat in the bar car, drinking Guinness and smoking cigs for the entirety of the 60-minute ride. Caroline smoked Marlboro Lights; I smoked Parliament Regulars. They didn’t sell lights anywhere in Europe, which drove me mad. You’d think the two would taste and smoke similarly, but they don’t, not even close.

“Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.” -BourdainMarch 23, 2006It was pitch black out when the cab dropped me off at Newark. I still had 2 hours before my flight, so I stayed outside pacing, chain-smoking Parliament Lights. This has always been my pre-flight ritual. I get anxious thinking about plane crashes. I’ve seen the movie, Flight, some pilots are not upstanding, law-abiding citizens like me.

“Sometimes all you need to get by is a girly” -Guru (Gangstar, “The Planet”)A few weeks later, I was rescued by a friend from college, Dave, who told me he had an available room for sublet in his Park Slope, Brooklyn, apartment. The only catch was I had to move immediately if I wanted it, because he badly needed rent money. So, I packed my bag that day and found the earliest flight I could. I moved on May 2, 2005.

ME“I used to do drugs. I still do, I just used to too”-Mitch HedbergI spent my first year of college at Indiana University in Bloomington, in a bad depression, getting as fucked up as possible on booze, weed, and the occasional pill, trying not to think about my dad slowly decaying in Northbrook. Blacking out became my norm. I can’t even recall my major, because I hardly went to class. Business, maybe? Journalism? Not sure.
