The strangest part of the Ruben Amorim debate is that the only big name who has discussed sacking the Manchester United manager so far is Ruben Amorim himself, an admission he made seven days ago – which is a long time in United’s current life. That was after the defeat to West Ham, the 17th of the season, since when there has been an 18th. The support seemed, even at Stamford Bridge to be broadly behind Amorim – they sang his song, even if there might be private misgivings.

Has there ever been a transfer window quite like Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s January 2025? By Saturday morning he may be able to say that in the space of 10 days he has got rid of the Spanish-Argentine boyband-style prodigy Alejandro Garnacho and the officers’ mess archetype, Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie. At the very least one might say that the plutocrat now in charge of Manchester United does not discriminate on what kind of talent he considers dispensable.
