British Muslim leaders have paid tribute to Pope Francis, the leader of the global Roman Catholic Church, who died on Monday aged 88. The Vatican said the pope, who was elected to the position in 2013, had died following a stroke and cardiac arrest. His final appearance was at the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square on Sunday, where he gave an Easter address.

Families, business owners and local councillors in Slough are battling to save two libraries ahead of a crunch meeting that will decide their future next month. Chandra Muvvala, an independent councillor for Langley Marish, who is leading the campaign to save Langley and Cippenham libraries, is asking local families and politicians to join a protest outside council offices on 24 April.

Charities and senior education professionals have hailed the appointment of Sir Hamid Patel as the interim chair of Ofsted as a “landmark moment showcasing the incredible contributions British Muslims make to society”. The education regulatory body recently announced that Patel, who has been an Ofsted board member since 2019, will take up the role for five months after Dame Christine Ryan steps down at the end of March.

His extensive collection of ornate carpets comprises more than 4,000 examples from Iran, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, China, England and Ireland. Born in a small village in the mountains of north-west Iran, Javadi-Babreh began weaving rugs at the age of four, learning the skill with the help of his brother.
