According to the Indiana Department of Education, there were 16,942 children in foster care in Indiana in 2022. Locally, Resources of Hope is a nonprofit that aims to provide resources for foster kids in Indiana through its programming and outreach initiatives. Within Resources of Hope, seven different programs help support kids in foster care and the families that take care of them, including kinship families.

According to the National Institute of Health, more than 8 million children younger than age 18 live with at least one adult who has a substance use disorder. Locally, Camp Mariposa works with youth that are affected by the substance use disorder of a family member, focusing on addiction prevention through mentorship and its weekend camp, offered six times a year. A Youth Drug Prevention CampCamp Mariposa is run through Aaron’s Place of Overdose Lifeline Inc. and is part of the Eluna Network.

Tri Kappa, an Indiana-based philanthropic sorority, will begin selling tickets for its fifth annual Bourbon Raffle fundraiser April 7. The sorority will raffle off 10 bourbons, sponsored by Holly Package Liquor. All proceeds will support Hamilton County residents in a variety of ways, including student scholarships, programs addressing food insecurity and fine arts initiatives. “Scholarships are a big portion of what we use our fundraising for,” said Nanette Foster, president of Tri Kappa Carmel.

After volunteering to help refugees last summer, 16-year-old Arya Goel of Carmel was inspired to write a book about what she learned from the experience. In February, she self-published “A Student’s Guide to Global Health: The Systems, Foundation, and Equity Needed in Healthcare.” All profits from book sales will be donated to the International Rescue Committee, an organization that provides relief to families living in regions of humanitarian and health care crises.

Carmel’s Cyberpatriot chapter has enjoyed success since forming in 2019. The CyberHounds have been defending state champions since 2020 and are the only team in Indiana to be a national finalist two consecutive years. CyberPatriot is a national youth cyber education program created by the Air & Space Forces Association. The virtual program aims to inspire K-12 students across the nation toward careers in cybersecurity or other STEM-related fields.
