Photo: e.l.f. Unsurprisingly, the idiom “one-trick pony” was originally coined in reference to an actual pony — not just a boring, untalented person. Reportedly, the phrase was born on the American circus circuit in the early 1900s to truthfully advertise that, heads up, these ponies you paid money to see were taught one trick and one trick only. Now, e.l.f. is leveraging the same harmless-but-slightly-disparaging idiom in its new campaign for the much-loved Halo Glow Liquid Filter.

Sportswear is so well integrated into the larger fashion landscape that most people wouldn’t — couldn’t — easily separate the two. From the integration of new garment mechanics (see: the addition of buttonholes to petitcoats for easier horse dismounts) to the invention of new pieces altogether, the impact sports has made on what we wear is a storied history. And you can’t talk about that history without bringing up Lacoste.
