“I’m not good,” the man behind the wheel of the black Toyota Corolla repeatedly told Radford city police officer J.K. Caudell during a traffic stop last July. Caudell found two empty vodka bottles under the passenger’s seat of the car and a mixed drink in the cupholder. The man’s parents had called police after receiving texts from him saying he was planning on crashing his car. Flock Safety cameras identified and located his vehicle based on information from the parents.

Roanoke’s planning commission will consider a rezoning at the Riverdale development and another at The Foundry Realty during their Monday afternoon meeting. Riverdale is home to the old American Viscose rayon plant, which shut down in 1958. Developer Ed Walker bought the property in 2023 to turn it into a mix of apartments, commercial spaces and industrial tenants.

Former Vice Mayor Joe Cobb’s election to mayor left an open seat on the Roanoke City Council that the council will soon start working to fill. Cobb still had two years left on his council term when he was elected mayor in November. At the end of the new council’s first meeting on Monday, Cobb said the council is beginning to receive applications. The city is asking for a “statement of intent” from interested candidates, detailing their desire to be considered and their experience.

After elections officials spent more than 10 hours counting ballots Thursday, Roanoke Circuit Judge David Carson announced that the Roanoke mayoral election recount would stop for the night to be continued on Friday. At around 5:45 p.m., Carson, who is overseeing the recount legal proceedings alongside two other judges, said officials were to finish the boxes of ballots they were counting and leave the city courthouse for the night.

In the city’s first-ever snowplow naming contest, more than 300 names were submitted by residents hoping to see their idea on the side of the vehicle. Fleet manager Wayne Farley said entries came from residents ranging in age from 4 years to 72 years old.
