In 2020, Brian Chan, 28, opened a pop-up store in Chinatown, where he flipped and sold sneakers. The pop-up was part of Vital Kicks, a luxury streetwear company he founded in 2017. Last year, the pop-up transformed into Vital Chinatown, a permanent store along West Cermak Road where clients shop for bold sneakers and colorful hoodies while strong rhythms of rap and hip-hop music play in the background.

For the past few years, Josh McKenzie had a strong fanbase on NU’s. As the face of Wildcat Welcome, students cheered enthusiastically during his speeches and opened his emails gleefully. When McKenzie parted ways with NU last year, a question arose: Who will take on the title of the University’s slayest employee? NBN spent the quarter on a search for his successor.

One petal picked. February 7. One earthly rotation passesso rapidly, I almost forgot a year marking loss has arrived. I’ve been crossing streets quicklyand hopping on buses to and from destinations. When I walk out of the practice room that day, the sky glows,a baby blue opening up to warm pinks. The lake’s waves lap over each other, fluttering like an angel’s wings. I stand still and watch. Two petals picked. My friend turned 20 on the first day of Chinese New Year.

My photo archives show ghosts two decades past: The proud gate standing in front of Old Chinatown, in all its deep red and gold glory,and I can practically hear the hordeof cars inching along the narrow road. The Chiu family opened Chiu Quon Bakery in 1986, serving Chicago’s Chinatown community after they immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong. As the oldest bakery in Chicago’s Chinatown, they have survived both the 2009 Recession and the COVID pandemic. Sammi Li talked to the married couple running the bakery, owner Joyce Chiu and manager Will Chan, about the history and the future of their family-owned bakery.

When the news broke that Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh was the first identifying Asian to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress this year, Communication third-year Kylie Kim felt both excited and slightly disappointed. “This should have been happening years ago,” Kim said. While Asian representation in the media has increased over the years, many Asian students in the School of Communication said they shared Kim’s sentiment.
