After two months of trial, jurors unanimously recommended the death sentence for Robert Bowers, the gunman who killed 11 worshippers in a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018 – the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history. A federal judge formally imposed the sentence on Aug. 3, 2023. The name of the synagogue, Tree of Life, has almost become shorthand for the tragedy.
