___________________MV Kalangala, a vessel that plies the Lutoboka-Nakiwogo route on Lake Victoria, has temporarily suspended daily operations for annual servicing and maintenance, which will take 45 days. According to the letter from the Ministry of Works and Transport dated today (May 7, 2025), this mandatory service is aimed at ensuring the life span of the vessel as well as safety for passengers.

________________The Uganda Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Government of Uganda, has provided relief materials to victims of a severe storm in Kalangala. Each affected household received essential supplies, including saucepans, jerrycans, plates, knives, and solar-powered lights, among others. Murekatete Emerance, an expectant mother, recounted her terrifying experience. “As I was in bed, my house disappeared, leaving me wondering where it had gone,” she said.

___________________A deadly storm that tore through Kalangala on Saturday morning has claimed another life, bringing the death toll to four. Allen Kobusingye Mukyasi succumbed to her injuries at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, where victims of the storm’s fury were taken for treatment. Mukyasi, the wife of Corporal Mukyasi, had been critically injured in the storm. Her husband remains in critical condition at the same hospital.

________________A couple of peculiar diseases have long clogged islanders’ bodies due to barriers in accessing appropriate health care. Kalangala, an island district with 84 islands, 64 of which are habitable, has only 16 health units. Some of these facilities serve over 10 landing sites located on different islands. Besides crossing Lake Victoria’s rough waters to access health care services, mothers and children—the most vulnerable—are always hindered by costly transport.
