The coldest January night in 15 years hit the UK as more freezing temperatures are expected over the weekend. Overnight temperatures dropped to minus 14.5C in Altnaharra, a hamlet in Sutherland, the most northern region of the Highlands, making it the coldest night of the winter so far in the UK and the coldest January overnight temperature since 2010 – which was a month that saw temperatures drop below minus 15C several times at locations across the UK.

Sleep deprivation can hamper the brain’s ability to suppress unwanted memories and intrusive thoughts, according to a new study. Scientists at the University of York and the University of East Anglia have shown that sleep deprivation interferes with the ability of the prefrontal area of the brain to restrict the surfacing of memories that would have otherwise been suppressed.

Wildfires sweeping the Los Angeles area have killed at least 10 people and destroyed more than 10,000 homes and other buildings, officials said. Residents are being urged to heed evacuation orders after a new blaze ignited and quickly grew as rescuers warn the situation could get worse. The fires spread in 48 hours across nearly 30,000 acres, fuelled by a fierce windstorm known as the Santa Ana winds.

Two more lynx have been spotted in the Highlands and police said they believe the sighting is connected to the release of two lynx seen in the same area, which were safely captured on Thursday. Police received reports the animals had been seen in the Dell of Killiehuntly, near the town of Kingussie, at about 7.10am today and people in the areahave been warned not to approach the animals.
