    Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) started making waves a few years ago with the release of systems such as ChatGPT and DALL-E. They are able to produce sophisticated and human-like text, code, or images after the models powering them are trained on large quantities of data. However, it soon became apparent that the specific phrasing of a question or statement input by a user, known as a prompt, had an impact on the quality of the resulting output.

    In November 2024, voters in the U.S. elected Donald Trump to a second, non-consecutive term as the nation’s 47th President. Given U.S. prominence in the world, and the strong executive powers of the President, Trump and his administration will have a massive impact on everything from national security to the economy to the tenor of civic discourse—both inside and outside America. One area of impact being watched especially closely by policy experts: computer science.

    Like many in the K-12 CSEd community, I‘ve been reflecting on the changing landscape of computing—and coding—education in the age of Generative AI (GenAI). I have shared these evolving thoughts in recent presentations and keynote addresses (including a couple in India, at IISc Bangalore and IIT Gandhinagar in December 2024).
