NEW YORK — For nearly two decades, Texas investigators kept tabs on a man in connection with the brutal rape and murder of his ex-wife, Susan Woods, who was found dead in her bathtub. The real killer, however, was revealed in 2006 through new forensic technology not available in 1987 and it was used to apprehend and convict Joseph Scott Hatley.

INDEPENDENCE – Plastic grocery bags from Independence and the surrounding area are being recycled locally into full size sleeping mats for the homeless and disaster victims. It takes about 400 bags to make one six foot by three foot sleeping mat. Area individuals have been recycling their plastic grocery bags by bringing them to the First United Methodist Church in Independence where the “Methodist Mat Makers” transform them into mats.

INDEPENDENCE – About a dozen young girls meet for mission, food and fun on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. This ecumenical group made up of girls from different churches meet at the First United Methodist Church after school from 3:30 to 5 p.m.In addition to food (pizza or treats) and singing, the girls help out with the mission work of turning plastic grocery bags into mats for the homeless and other disaster victims.
