There are only a few days left to attend this year’s fall festival at Cox Farms in Centreville, Virginia, where family-friendly entertainment and attractions have been drawing people for decades. “We love the atmosphere, we love the staff … I think it’s just so homey,” said Diva Mohammadullah, of Reston, who was joined this year by her daughter Ridham, a niece and a young neighbor. “We come here every year. Ridham has been here since she was in my belly,” said Mohammadullah.

Municipalities seem to respect other local area restaurant weeks — not overlapping, so they don’t have to share diners. This restaurant week belongs to Alexandria in Virginia. More than 90 restaurants across Alexandria’s neighborhoods are offering special menus now through Sunday, Aug. 25. In-person diners can choose from $27.50, $40 or $50 multicourse Restaurant Week meals. Organizers say the $27.50 offer is a nod to Alexandria’s 275th anniversary.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she’s heartbroken about the passing of her father, Joe Bowser, who died Friday. He was 88 years old. In a statement on his death, Mayor Bowser said that she owes her career in public service to her father. “For 52 years, my dad has been at my side — guiding me, cheering for me, loving me,” Mayor Bowser said. “He was the first person to take me to a community meeting.

Local canines of Czech origin put on an exciting show at the Czech Republic embassy in D.C. on Sunday. The dogs, Rey and Bolo, are members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit. They were born in Europe, but trained here. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Zach Buttrey, who has been a member of the K9 unit for 14 years, said the dogs have been part of the embassy open house for the past few years.
