In Douglas Lyons’s new musical, Beau, now running at Theatre 154, sixth-grader Ace Baker (33-year-old Matt Rodin credibly portraying a teen) manages to placate his tormentor, Ferris (Cory Jeacoma), with a daily tribute: a single cigarette pinched from his mother’s purse. The offering buys a respite from a routine of gut punches and anti-gay slurs.

AbstractPeptides available in biological niches inhabited by the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus serve as a rich source of amino acids required for growth and successful host colonisation. Uptake of peptides by S. aureus involves at least two transport systems: the di/tripeptide permease DtpT and the oligopeptide ABC transporter Opp3. Here we study the individual and combined functions of DtpT and Opp3 in enabling utilisation of diverse di-/tripeptides via a high-throughput phenotypic screen.

AbstractSeveral species of Pythium are destructive soilborne pathogens, causing root rot and damping-off of seedlings and posing significant challenges in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). In this study, four isolates (PT2-1-1, PT2-1-2, PT5, and PT6) were obtained from infected amaranth seedlings and confirmed as P. aphanidermatum through morphology and ITS rDNA sequencing. These isolates dramatically reduced the root length of amaranth seedlings in plate-based pathogenicity assays.

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, now at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, is one smart revue, as befits the genius who radically upped Broadway’s game. Old Friends stems from a gala one-night tribute in London in May 2022, the success of which inspired deviser/producer Cameron Macintosh to give it a run in the West End (2023-24), Los Angeles (this past winter), and now where it truly belongs, in New York City.

Where are the whales of yesteryear? A Pacific Coast community demands answers. Playwright Abe Koogler (Staff Meal) doesn’t shy away from chaos and ambiguity in Deep Blue Sound, which debuted as part of Clubbed Thumb’s 2023 “Summerworks” slate. Each of the nine actors gets at least two roles, and some triple up. A semicircle of mismatched wooden chairs spreads across the stage (basic set by dots). At the outset, the performers identify their characters.

If you’ve been following the three-decade career of Irish playwright Enda Walsh, you might approach Safe House–his 10th production at St. Ann’s Warehouse–with some warranted trepidation. His plays tend to veer off the wall, and not always as effectively as 2012’s Misterman, which had the considerable advantage of Cillian Murphy honing the edge of madness.

(June 13, 2024) When Kate Hamill’s fleet and clever adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1811 novel “Sense and Sensibility” opened in a basement theater in the Bowery a decade ago, it proved the surprise hit of the New York season (I sang its praises in Time Out). Hamill has since gone on to shake up and revivify a number of classic works. “Tony, Tony, Tony” is not a snippet of dialogue you would have heard in the first iteration of Syncing Ink, at the Flea Theater in 2017. But hip-hop is all about improv and seizing the moment, so it’s perfectly à propos in this blackbox revival at the Apollo’s Victoria Theatre. The entire six-member cast has reconvened, including Kara Young, who has since garnered a trio of Tony nominations (including one for the recent Purlie Victorious).

Brian Friel was a master of the subtle reveal. In Molly Sweeney – the fourth and final revival in the Irish Repertory’s Friel Project this season, directed by Rep co-founder Charlotte Moore – the three characters scarcely move. Heeding the author’s recommendation, each may occasionally stand up from his or her signature chair (set design by Charlie Corcoran) to hover or pace a bit, but they never stray beyond their personal space; nor do they overlap verbally.
