There are few names that get Disney historians to raise their eyebrows like Disneytoon. The studio behind the Mouse House's direct-to-home-media racket from 1990 to 2018, Disneytoon was tasked with knocking out sequels, prequels, and spin-offs to its parent company's biggest animated films as quickly and, just as importantly, cheaply as possible. The results weren't exactly Disney magic, but you can't blame the studio's artists for doing what they could.

The agonizingly long wait for Josh and Benny Safdie's follow-up to their nerve-shredding 2019 masterpiece "Uncut Gems" is finally over, and, on the plus side, we're going to be getting two films from the brothers this year. Whether there's a downside to the fact that they're now working separately remains to be seen.

There's a whole lot of "TV show" in the TV show "Riverdale." Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's small screen Archie Comics adaptation — an inspiredly chaotic queer work that's as cheerfully absurd as it is painfully earnest when it wants to be — burns through storylines like there's no tomorrow. It's how, in the end, the show is able to indulge in subplots involving everything from illegal teen convict fight clubs to diabolical sorcerers from alternate realities to the tickle porn industry.

"Primal" is many things. For starters, it's a thoughtful look at the unifying experiences of loss and grief, as well as one of the most accurate (and sensitive) depictions of what it's like to live with an animal companion put to screen. It's also the gnarliest animated "Conan the Barbarian" adaptation that's never been made and often plays like a Robert E. Howard fever dream.
