I am standing alone on an isolated plot of land in the Santa Monica Mountains, about a 30-minute drive northwest of Malibu, in the small, unincorporated community of Agoura. As I look around, it’s nearly impossible to comprehend that this barren site was once home to the worship community of one of the most celebrated names in spiritual jazz music—or that this entire area had, just seven years earlier, been destroyed by wildfire.

It’s Sunday afternoon in the summer of 2022. I’m at Elysian Park in Los Angeles, three miles from Downtown and within earshot of Dodger Stadium. It’s a typically warm and sunny day, and this section of the park is busy with competing birthday parties, families having a cookout, and teenagers brazenly hitting dab pens.

It is late morning, the sun already bright and hot, and I’ve just arrived at Tchoupitoulas Street, a mostly nondescript corridor of New Orleans. As I stand on the sidewalk, cars whiz past, and I look in front of me at an expansive mural. It is colorful and vibrant, rich and impressive in its scale. But it is still evolving, much like the city itself.
