    A new study has found people with excessive belly fat may develop Alzheimer’s 20 years earlier - with symptoms not developing for two decades. Scans of obese middle-aged people have shown increased visceral fat correlates to higher amounts of sticky amyloid and tau tangles in the brain - both directly linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Visceral fat is stored deep within the abdominal cavity and surrounds the stomach and abdomen, as well as important organs such as the liver and intestine.

    The nuclear energy "tomb", named Onkalo, has cost the Finnish government £860 million and is said to be “a model for the entire world” in the sustainable storage of spent nuclear energy. The site - which is near Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant in Eurajoki - is due to be fully sealed off to all humans in 2025. Journalist Erika Benke visited the underground chamber last year, where she said it took 15 minutes of pure descent to reach the bedrock tomb.

    Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks took to Instagram to announce that his van containing 2,500 pies had been stolen as he urged thieves to embrace the Christmas spirit and give the food to community centres. The successful pub and restaurant owner from Yorkshire had been due to deliver them to a pop-up pie stall at York Christmas Market. “These guys probably didn’t bargain for the nearly ton of pies that is in the back [of the van]” he told his 141K Instagram followers.

    A 99-year-old British WW2 veteran has travelled 4,400 miles from her Canada home to ask Keir Starmer to unfreeze her pension - but the PM has turned down a meeting with her. Anne Puckridge - who turns 100 on December 20 - has had her pension frozen since 2001 when she retired and moved to Canada to be closer to her family. She receives state pension of just £72.50 a week, in comparison to the inflated current rate of £169.50 if she had stayed in Britain.

    A 57-year-old has been arrested after a video of a man driving a tractor through floodwaters in Worcestershire went viral. The recording showed a huge wave of water from the tractor’s wake damage shopfronts and homes as well as break windows in the town of Tenbury Wells. The man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and criminal damage and has now been released on bail pending inquiries.
