Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) urged Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday to open a federal hate crime investigation into the arson attack on Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home earlier this week. The Democratic governor was asleep in the state’s governor’s mansion with his wife, four children, two dogs and another family who had celebrated Passover with the Shapiros over the weekend when all of the occupants were startled awake by state troopers around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Juan Francisco-Mendez and Marilu Domingo-Ortiz remained calm and composed as they kept the windows rolled up, with Francisco-Mendez holding his hands in his lap. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that President Donald Trump is exploring legal pathways to “deport” U.S. citizens to El Salvador, where the administration has already arranged to house deported immigrants in a prison known for its human rights abuses. Leavitt suggested the effort would be limited to people who have committed major crimes, but Trump has also mentioned the possibility of sending people who commit lesser offenses abroad.
