(WJHL) — With summer temperatures in full effect, many are looking for ways to cool off, including those whose job is to rescue people in trouble.  People are trying to stay cool, whether on or off the job. Whether you’re working outside or enjoying the summer, the heat can take a toll. Splash pads are an ideal place to be right now. Cynthia Rivera of Johnson City says she is grateful to have places like a splash pad so her kids can cool off. “They’re excited,” she said.

    ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — It’s been almost nine months since Hurricane Helene hit the region, and there are still a few construction projects on major roads in our area that haven’t been completed. One of those projects is the Broad Street bridge in Elizabethton. The renovation of the bridge is a state project, with no local or county government involvement. As repairs continue, the closure is affecting the city.

    SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — You can find almost anything on Facebook’s Marketplace these days. A man in Virginia used the app to purchase a house, which he plans to demolish. However, the transaction will help preserve its historical significance. It was a busy day on Reedy Creek Drive in Sullivan County as Marty Judd helped Doug Hakey gently dismantle the old Droke-Starbuck house. Judd said the house is found in historical books that claim it was built in 1795.

(WJHL) — News Channel 11 is excited to begin a new series, highlighting nurses in the Tri-Cities region.  Nurses are on the front lines of healthcare and are the heart and soul of hospitals and practices. Alexis Lunsford stays busy. She sees a steady stream of patients at ETSU Health Family Medicine in Johnson City. “I decided to do nursing just because I love to help people,” Lunsford said.

(WJHL) — Project SEARCH is a program that started in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to give students with physical and intellectual disabilities the chance to learn job skills with the goal of finding employment. In this week’s Community Heroes, Sara Diamond learned that the first Project SEARCH graduating class from Science Hill High School in Johnson City is finding a path and making a difference in the community.
