With my first post back as a writer for The Reader, I have to take a moment to thank Nebraska Public Media for giving us a home to continue the legacy established by the late and truly great John Heaston. Nebraska Public Media has been incredibly vocal about its desire to maintain John’s vision, to continue giving voices to those in Nebraska with messages worth sharing, and to create a safe and inclusive space where everyone can thrive.

The first article I ever published in Omaha was a story about Espana, and the reverence owner Carlos Mendez demonstrated with every detail of the establishment and the dishes it served. It’s only fitting that my final feature for The Reader checks in on Mendez, catches you up on his accomplishments, and bookends my run as Contributing Editor with a look at what he has cooking up for Omaha these days.

A new spot is preparing for a grand opening at 655 N 114th and Dodge. Sand Point New England Fare is brought to you by the minds who gave you Three Kids Lobster, and is planning a Fall opening. Expect ahi burgers, chowders, succulent seafood on a half shell, and other ubiquitous New England favorites. Monday through Thursday 11am- 9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am-9pm. Bellevue’s newest glizzery is almost ready to go Dog-wild.

This is the weekend to celebrate the sights and sounds, and to savor the flavor of Omaha’s annual Italian Festival. Head to Il Palazzo this Friday through Sunday at 5110 N 132nd street. The event benefits the American Italian Heritage Society, and tickets are $7 at the door. Food Pavillions will feature pastas, sausage and peppers, Chicken Sicilian, meatball sandwiches, salads, pizza, shrimp and calamari, an Italian deli, gelati, cannoli, biscotti, and more.

Announced in a post on Facebook last night, Julio’s at 192nd and Q is closed immediately. The post indicated that Julio’s would be opening in a smaller venue next year, and that a new dining establishment would be occupying the bay Julio’s is now vacating. New at 7007 Grover street, Nebraska Del Peru is now serving inside Firewater Grille. Expect dishes to range from smokey to very spicy, with hints of cumin, oregano, and mint.
