Baking, constructing, and decorating a cake, especially a layer cake, requires a keen understanding of both art and science. While decorating your cake so that it looks like it came out of a bakery is important, it's all for nothing if your cake topples over or sinks in on itself before you can get around to serving it. As you construct taller and heavier cakes, you're going to need to start to play with structure and find ways to keep the cake from imploding.

There is a whole lot to love about everyone's affordable neighborhood grocery store: Aldi. Its shelves are stocked with some of my favorite goodies, whether I want to pick up a pack of its in-house cookies or am after a healthy snack to fuel my workday. And if I'm throwing a dinner party or a decadent brunch — and don't want to pick up a cookie sheet or a loaf pan — I will peruse Aldi's baked good section to find something worthy of picking up.

Aldi is a great store to visit when you need to stock up on affordably priced and generally decent-quality staple goods. And, honestly there's nothing more deserving of the title of "staple good" than bread. Sandwich bread is a must-have in a busy household, and it's a key component of many recipes, including French toast. You might even be surprised by the number of breads that Aldi carries, seeing as how it doesn't even have an in-store bakery.
