Daniel Anglés-Alcázar, assistant professor of physics, has been awarded a 2025 Sloan Research Fellowship, one of the most competitive honors for early-career researchers in the United States and Canada. Anglés-Alcázar was one of 126 scientists selected by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for the fellowship, which recognizes researchers for their exceptional creativity and potential to lead in their fields.

Harvey Ronald Gilbert, Professor Emeritus and former head of the Department of Communication Sciences, passed away on Feb. 8, 2025, at his home in State College, Pennsylvania. Gilbert was a respected and dynamic scholar of speech-language pathology who served UConn for two decades. He joined the University in 1990 and led the Department of Communication Sciences until 2005, earning a reputation for leading with integrity and fairness and supporting junior faculty.

This winter, 10 UConn students traveled to Taiwan for a three-week Earth science field course, learning alongside local students and experiencing the country’s unique geology, geography and culture firsthand. The course Winter Geoscience and Geohazards in Taiwan, led by Tim Byrne, professor of Earth sciences, gives students across multiple disciplines the chance to conduct fieldwork—learning everything from field mapping to data collection and synthesis—while gaining a new cultural perspective.
