And while Texas may be best known for those Friday night lights, students across the state participate in all sorts of athletics — swimming, tennis, golf, wrestling, soccer, volleyball, you name it. The Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has led to fear and uncertainty for immigrants across the nation — including in Texas. A federal judge is pushing the Trump administration for more details about flights that deported hundreds of alleged Venezuelan gang members to a prison in El Salvador, despite his order to turn the planes around. Sergio Martínez-Beltrán, who covers immigration for NPR, said these removal flights are supposed to be paused right now while the court case continues.

It’s been five years since Texas shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A lot of businesses suffered — hotels, movie theaters, concert venues, theme parks and, of course, restaurants. In North Texas, 18% of restaurants closed between March 2020 and March 2021, according to the Texas Restaurant Association. Many still mourn the eateries that are no longer with us.

Over the last five years, viewership of women’s sports has shot up at a meteoric pace. Now, Austinites will have the chance to watch in a new setting: Texas’ first women’s sports bar. The 1972 Pub officially opens on March 19 across from UT’s campus and is committed to only showing women’s sports. On March 8, in honor of International Women’s Day, the pub opened its doors for visitors to check out the space — and watch some basketball.

The Texas House Committee on Public Education is set to take up their most anticipated bill of the session this week: school vouchers. What the governor calls "school choice" or "education savings accounts," this bill would allocate public dollars to send some Texas students to private schools or pay for other education-related expenses.
