In the heat of summer 1998 in Austin, a 16-year-old boy is coming into his own at a boxing gym. He’s under the tutelage of a Haitian-born ex-fighter. Then, one night, the boy vanishes. This is the story that underpins “The Slip,” a new novel out this week by Austin-based author Lucas Schaefer. The novel begins more than a decade after the boy’s disappearance when his Uncle Bob receives a disorienting tip, propelling a new investigation. The book is chock full of other characters too.

Logan Garza arrived in Texarkana in early 2022 when she was transferred to the Bowie County Women’s Center. The center helps people completing court-mandated rehab – and Garza was moved there because after she started a jail sentence in another part of the state, she discovered she was pregnant. Garza says realizing she was going to be a mom was a wake-up call. “I had a really bad lifestyle. I was just in and out of jail all the time,” she said.

The legislative session ends in about three weeks, and there is an avalanche of potential legislation yet to be passed by lawmakers. A measure just passed by the Senate exposes anyone who manufactures, distributes, mails, prescribes or provides an abortion-inducing drug to lawsuits of up to $100,000, The Texas Tribune reports. It also expands the wrongful death statute to encourage family members, like men who believe their partner had an abortion, to sue up to six years after the event.
