wow ok hi, it’s been a bit of a hectic beginning of the month, this is later than usual, I hope you’re all out enjoying life and didn’t even noticehere’s what I’ve been up to:• A Dark and Starless Forest, Sarah Hollowell — Teenagers with magic powers all live in a house in the middle of the woods with a guardian who tries to protect them from the outside world, but then some of the girls go missing, bad things ensue. You can probably spot the twist in this one just from that sentence.

Akil Thomas, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round of the 2018 draft, made his NHL debut this week. The forward has seen limited ice time so far, but made a big impact in his time against the Sharks. Thomas’s first NHL goal, and first career point, came at 11:13 in the first period. Thomas and PL Dubois came down the ice together, with Thomas using other players as a screen to find the back of the net.

“Oh, I’ll put together my 2023 list once the new year rolls around,” I said. “Oh, I don’t need to prep for any of this, it’ll be easy,” I said. Friends, turns out when you essentially double the number of Things What You Did from one year to the next, it becomes a lot harder to make any decisions when it comes to even vaguely ranking things. Whoops my bad. Anyhow. Here are my favorite books and movies that I enjoyed in 2023.

• Killers of the Flower Moon — Go see this. Ignore the run time. The film is engaging the whole way through, just try not to chug a soda during the previews and you’ll be fine. There is a lot to take in here, and I look forward to watching it again with closed captioning in the future, to catch things that I missed. Stellar performances by the whole cast, but especially Lily Gladstone, who is outstanding.

The Los Angeles Kings are frequent fliers in the preseason, heading to spots like Las Vegas (pre-Golden Knights) and Salt Lake City to bring NHL hockey to fans who live there. They’ve headed abroad, too, most recently with this year’s stint in Australia. In 2024, the Kings head abroad again, albeit somewhere a little bit more familiar. The Kings will play two preseason games in Québec City, in addition to holding the final week of their training camp there.
