May 13, 2025 Fabian Schmidt, who is originally from Germany, made it clear that he’s proud to be in America, but said he’s still reeling from his unexpected two-month detention that he described as “dehumanizing.”The permanent legal resident, who has lived in New Hampshire since 2022, was stopped at Logan International Airport on March 7 after visiting family in Europe. He spoke to GBH News on Tuesday about the experience and trying to readjust back to his normal life after his release.

The 30-year-old Tufts graduate student from Turkey took part in a news conference at Logan Airport Saturday night, soon after landing in Boston.

May 09, 2025 Rümeysa Öztürk was released on Friday after 5 p.m., speaking briefly to supporters and press outside of the Basile, Louisiana, facility. “Thank you so much for all the support and love,” she said. District of Vermont Judge William Sessions ordered the release of the Tufts PhD student at a bail hearing earlier in the day, saying that she had “raised a substantial claim of constitutional violation” and he doesn’t see her as a flight risk or a danger.

May 09, 2025 District of Vermont Judge William Sessions ordered the release of Tufts PhD student Rümeysa Öztürk at a hearing Friday, saying that she was “raised a substantial claim of constitutional violation” and he doesn’t see her as a flight risk. The legal question at the heart of the case is whether her free speech and due process rights have been violated. The student from Turkey was detained six weeks ago in Somerville by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Fabian Schmidt, the New Hampshire green card holder detained by federal immigration authorities, has been released from detention after nearly two months in federal custody. His mother Astrid Senior confirmed he was released late Thursday night and declined an interview. “FABIAN IS FREE and HOME!!!!,” his partner Bhavani Hodgkins posted on Facebook. The account wrote the post was also from Fabian himself, asking for patience and privacy.
