Leading academics and writers from across the Caribbean, the USA and Canada attended the 17th conference of the Association of Caribbean Women Writers and Scholars at UCCI last week, the first time the event has been held in the Cayman Islands. Speakers and delegates from more than 20 universities took part in the three-day event which had the theme “Global Feminist Leadership in a Time of Crisis: Scholarship, Advocacy, Activism, Creativity, and Pedagogy”.

Cayman Islands Humane Society co-founder Sarah Hill, 82, braved speeds of 120 miles per hour last weekend on top of a vintage airplane while taking part in a wing walk to raise funds for an animal charity close to her home in East Sussex, UK. Hill, formerly Sarah Graham-Taylor, had lived in the Cayman Islands with her family for many years before moving to the UK.

Governor Jane Owen, 62, completed the 33rd annual Flowers Sea Swim on 14 June, the first time she had attempted the mile-long open-water swim, telling the Compass at the finish line that her strategy of “taking it slow and steady” had paid off. Owen was one of 633 swimmers who finished the race on Saturday afternoon, completing the distance in 53 minutes and 43 seconds.

A film concept that started as a 5th grade school project is now on its way to an international film festival. Asher Lopez was just 10 years old when he came up with the idea of a Caymanian superhero called AwesomeMan. He wrote and filmed a short movie about AwesomeMan as his school passion project, using friends as actors and crew members and filming the whole things on his iPad camera. “I showed it to the parents and everyone loved it,” he recalls.
