The biggest cycle ride Cayman has seen for years took place today in memory of Per Undheim, who was struck and killed by a motorist while on an early-morning ride on Easter Monday. Around 130 cyclists set off early Sunday in the memorial ride, starting at Red Bay and doing a loop of East End, taking in North Side and returning by Frank Sound Road.

Cayman’s cycling community is coming together for a ride this Sunday to remember their friend and fellow cyclist Per Undheim. Keen triathlete and father-of-two Undheim, who worked at Cayman Physiotherapy, was knocked down and killed by a motorist while on an early-morning cycle ride on Easter Monday morning. His riding partner and co-worker, Andy Hall, suffered injuries in the incident.

Minutes just released by the reveal that an extra $11.1 million in spending was approved by Cabinet in two separate meetings over the last few months before the general election. At a special meeting of the Cabinet on Friday, 28 Feb., extra payments totalling $4,719,397.18 were approved in government spending across several departments including sports, communications and education, while a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 8 April approved an extra $6.4 million for education and Home Affairs.

Cayman’s cycling community say that they have been encouraged by the support from drivers in the days after father-of-two Per Undheim, 39, was killed while on an Easter Monday morning bike ride. “There was a larger group of us cycling this morning and we noticed that cars were giving us more space, we got the occasional wave, people flashed to let us go ahead and an ambulance put its lights on in support too,” said Cayman Cycling vice president Wayne Kirkconnell on Thursday morning.
