After the April 2023 announcement of increased security at U of M, institutional safety officers (ISOs) will be present on campus beginning May 1. The Manitoba legislature amended the police services act in 2021 to allow health campuses, colleges and universities in Manitoba to have ISOs present.

MFM, U of M’s campus and community radio station, is bringing back its annual Pledge-O-Rama later this month after a four-year hiatus. Pledge-O-Rama is the annual funding drive for UMFM, where listeners can donate to support the station.

University of Manitoba students faced class cancellations on Friday, March 22 and the following week after a fire broke out on the fifth floor of Tier and the Ellis building flooded. Winnipeg Fire Paramedics Services (WFPS) responded to a fire in Tier at 9 p.m. on March 21. The fire was extinguished by 9:17 p.m. Arts students were notified by email from the faculty of arts that, at the provost’s recommendation, classes held in the Tier building would be cancelled as of 9:49 a.m. on March 22.

The UMSU budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year was presented March 14 at the board of directors (BoD) meeting. Vice president finance and operations (VPFO) Vaibhav Varma presented the budget in order for approval at the March 28 meeting. The fiscal year runs from May 1 to April 30, and the budget is written in projections, or estimates of what numbers will be, Varma said.

Results for the 2024-25 UMSU general election are in. Divya Sharma, Prahbnoor Singh, Rachhvir Dhaliwal, Bolu Akindele and Carolyn Wang have been elected to make up the executive team for the union next year. The total turnout for this election was comprised of 16.8 per cent of the 23,675 eligible voters, a drop from last year’s 22.8 per cent of eligible voters, as reported on UMSU’s voting website, simplyvoting.ca.

Dhruvi Shah, candidate for international students’ representative, was disqualified from the 2024 UMSU general election. A complaint filed by candidate Krupa Mashru against Shah that led to her disqualification alleges that students associatedwith Shah’s campaign put a sticker over the image of opponent Mashru on a poster in University Centre. Shah confirmed thatthe incident was true when she took to Instagram to announce her disqualification.

A motion to allow amendments to a motion that suspended student-at-large Victoria Romero from UMSU meetings was ruled out of order. Motion 0598, brought forward by the judicial board at the Feb. 29 board of directors (BoD) meeting, requested that the board hear amendments to motion 0594, which suspended Romero from meetings following a vote by the BoD on Jan. 25. After a ten minute recess, the UMSU chair of the board Elbethel Masresha announced that she was ruling the motion out of order.

Divya Sharma Sharma is currently a second-year student studying global political economy. She identifies as a sister, mentor, student and immigrant. Sharma also describes herself as full of energy and said she wants to make sure the work she completes is the best it can be. Sharma has worked with the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation, CBC Manitoba’s community advisory board and the Manitoba chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
