AIB’s latest purchasing managers survey found manufacturers are contending with longer delivery times and higher input costs. Shipping firms have had to take longer, more costly routes to avoid skirmishes with Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have been attacking cargo ships in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea since November, an offshoot of the wider crisis in the Middle East. The Red Sea, via the Suez Canal, is the main artery for getting goods from Asia to Europe.

A daily fine of €10,000 will be applied on top of that lump sum for each day that Irish law is not brought into line with the EU’s rules. The penalty was imposed after Ireland failed to meet a September 2020 deadline for implementing the EU’s updated Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD).

While it means prices are still rising, the inflation rate has fallen by half a percentage point from 2.7pc in January. The slowdown is largely due to falling energy prices, which are 6.3pc lower than they were in February 2023. However, energy prices did rise slightly — by 0.5pc — in the month between January and February this year. Food prices are estimated to have increased by 0.5pc in the last month, and are up by 3.7pc in the last year, continuing an earlier slowdown.

A further fine of €30,000 will now be applied for every extra day the law is not in place. The penalty is due to a failure to meet a September 2020 deadline for implementing the EU’s updated Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD). The directive sets a 30pc quota for European content on streaming services, creates new online protections for children, and anti-hate speech rules that apply to video-sharing platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. It also strengthens national media regulators.

The corporate sustainability due diligence directive, tabled by the European Commission two years ago, was tentatively agreed by MEPs and EU governments at the end of last year.
