1 Introduction Language emerges early in infancy, is highly modifiable, and is a fundamental skill that sets the stage for various developmental outcomes. For example, language is an essential tool that enables young children to inhibit impulses, regulate strong emotions, and engage in prosocial interactions with peers (Bruce, Ermanni, and Bell 2023; Petersen et al. 2013; Yew and O'Kearney 2013).

AbstractOpioid use among pregnant women has more than quadrupled over the past 20 years; however, comorbid risk factors such as emotion dysregulation confound the developmental consequences of prenatal opioid use. Maternal respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) may help to disentangle the comorbid risk factors of prenatal emotion dysregulation and substance use and isolate their consequences on newborn neurobehavior.
