During the worst years of Detroit’s tax foreclosure crisis, about a decade ago, Wayne County could send upward of 20,000 properties to the auction block every year. The presidential race has changed dramatically since the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last month. Since then, President Joe Biden stepped out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination to become the county’s first female president, the first South Asian president and the second Black president. Both parties are still working hard to win Michigan. Detroit will be key to any victory.

Air conditioning was too expensive for most homeowners when Carroll was a kid. She still can’t afford air conditioning now, because of what it would do to her DTE Energy bill. Without the air conditioning, she can afford the roughly $85 her electric and gas bill costs in the summer months.
