1 Introduction At the Greenland continental shelf-break warm, salty Atlantic Water abuts cold, fresh Polar Water. The Atlantic Water is found offshore, largely separated from the Polar Water by the dynamic boundary of the current system and topography of the shelf-break. The rate of cross-shelf exchange in the region controls the net exchange of freshwater offshore and heat onshore, with climatically important impacts.
