When I was thirteen, I began flirting with a man who worked for my father. I also worked for my father, after school. His advertising agency was a mile from my bus stop. It was a mile further to my house, walking in the Florida heat or rain, elongated by the weight of my backpack and my day. Hurricane Milton made landfall in Sarasota, Florida, on October 9, less than two weeks after Helene hit the Big Bend region, decimating cities all along the western coast. Carolyn’s apartment was an eight-minute walk from the L train on a mostly treeless residential block near a small park and a cemetery. Built in 1905, it was a pale two-story brick row house converted into upper and lower apartments, with roof access, a wraparound gate in front, stone archways over the windows, and a molded plaster overhang decorated in faux garlands. Next door was a moving company, and on the other side was a neighborhood pharmacy.
