In an effort to recruit new teachers and district staff, they’re rolling out a new child care program for full-time employees. The childcare program offers district workers an affordable option. Right now, the program is open to 80 kids ranging from age 1 to 4 years old.

    SARASOTA, Fla. — Sarasota city leaders face a big decision Tuesday: Whether to preserve or demolish a hotel that once allowed African Americans a safe place to stay during the Jim Crow era when Sarasota was segregated. Originally known as the Colson Hotel, the building has been plagued with termites, cracks, broken windows, and possible mold which is spelled out in a 331-page document as part of Tuesday’s agenda.

    During National Hurricane Preparedness Week, three groups of fifth graders spent time teaching younger students about the importance of preparing for hurricanes and having a hurricane kit. The Douglas L. Jamerson Elementary School students collected items for the countywide hurricane kit supply drive and explained the importance of having those items in a hurricane kit. The hurricane kit items donated by Pinellas County School students will go to the St. Pete Free Clinic for residents in need.

    BRADENTON, Fla. — Florida is the third worst state for the number of sex trafficking crimes. Selah Freedom is Florida's largest anti-sex trafficking organization. On Thursday, UN delegates from Tajikistan in Central Asia toured a Bradenton Safe Home used to house and help sex trafficking victims. Tajikistan borders Afghanistan to the south and China to the east.

    TAMPA, Fla. — Two Tampa General Hospital employees, both working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, both diagnosed with breast cancer. That frightening diagnosis came just one week apart for Diane Allen and Gloribel Medina. The two women leaned on each other for support. They both made the decision to have bilateral mastectomies. Now, more than a year following their diagnoses, they are among the more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
