A black Chevrolet Tahoe crashed into the sign of the Nova Credit Union along 11th Avenue Boulevard SE following an earlier crash at the intersection of Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard and 11th Avenue Boulevard SE. A man was seen walking away from the Tahoe on foot before Hickory police officers quickly drove up and arrested him at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Conover’s mayor pro tem died on Monday. He served the city for more than 30 years. Bruce R. Eckard, 78, was first elected to the Conover City Council in 1985, then mayor in 1989. Eckard served as mayor for two decades. In 2011, Eckard returned to the Conover City Council, the city of Conover said in a news release. Eckard became mayor pro tem in 2021. Eckard remained in that position until his death.

Alexander County lost its second county manager in less than two years. Todd Herms, who left Maiden to work in Alexander County in 2024, put in his resignation, the Alexander County Board of Commissioners Chairman Marty Pennell said in a news release on Tuesday. “I just think it's best for me and my career at this point to pursue other opportunities,” Herms said in a phone interview on Tuesday.

Brookford Police Chief William Armstrong has maintained his innocence in an N.C. State Bureau of Investigation misconduct investigation regarding the chief’s work last year on a cold case. A family was displaced after a fire burned a home in Hickory on Tuesday morning. The Hickory Fire Department was called to a house fire at 42 14 St. SE around 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Hickory Fire Education Coordinator Terri Byers said. The fire heavily damaged the upper portion of the home. A gaping hole was left burned on the back of the house. The upper sides were also charred from the blaze. “I thought my cousin was home.
