“Hey, how have you been?” A friend texts me, out of the blue. I stare at the empty chat bubble, trying to figure out what to say. Dropping big news on someone always feels awkward, uncomfortable, uncertain. “Well, it’s been a bit of a wild ride…” I type out. Deep breath. Just gonna drop it in the chat. “I had spine surgery last week, and now I’m in recovery at home.” What a wild ride 2024 has already been. After months of leg and hip pain, I woke up unable to walk on February 4th, 2024.

What exactly are you allowed to say as a mother if you're feeling overwhelmed, over-touched, totally without a moment to yourself, totally at the whim and beck and call of all other people, and completely inundated with demands?⁠"This is hard," you might begin to say, trying to explain just how many times your body is touched, prodded, poked, pulled, and used. "I just need a minute," I’ll say to my kids in the morning as I'm trying to connect the coffee in the cup with my outstretched mouth.
