Jane has already spent a week tasting the consultants’ wines, and after this week will have a further week of tasting to go. As we record, Jane has tasted over 500 wines and Sarah has tasted over 250 wines, so two-thirds of the way through, it’s time to divulge their first impressions.

Justin Gibbs, co-founder of Liv-ex, the online trading platform used by over 600 merchants, talks to Sarah Kemp about how the Bordeaux market has fared over the years, and shares his thoughts on the 2024 En Primeur Bordeaux campaign, which is about to begin. Liv-ex is one of the world’s largest collectors of data on fine wine; 35-40% of Liv-ex’s global market share is Bordeaux – 25% down in the last two years, in line with the fine-wine market, which has seen a steep decline since October 2022.

There is one topic dominating the news in the wine world at the moment: tariffs. Sarah Kemp talks to Donald Ziraldo, co-founder of Inniskillin winery, a pioneer of the Canadian wine industry, and the man who was instrumental in creating the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA). Canada and Mexico were the first two countries Donald Trump put tariffs on. The Canadians have retaliated--in Ontario, for example, US wine and spirits have been cleared from the store shelves.

Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino 2019 2019 was a textbook year in southern Tuscany. A cold and rainy spring slowed the growing cycle before things warmed up significantly with hot, dry weather in June and July, punctuated by the occasional rainstorm. August saw more of the same with perfectly timed showers at the end of the month to refresh the vines and provide ideal picking conditions into the harvest which began on September 14.
