When I asked them whether concern about the environment or other risks was likely to affect their decisions about having families, they looked at me as if I were a pitiable doomer—no, not really.

Cheyanne Rider is a force, not so much to be reckoned with, but to have a real conversation. Though perhaps when the gavel is in her hand when she sits as chair for a Civil Discourse debate, her power is a bit more noticeable. Rider holds many titles. She is a dual-enrolled student with LBCC and Oregon State. Rider serves as a student leader with Civil Discourse and a student advocate for LB’s Cornerstone Program.

School finally started on February 12 for The Periwinkle Child Development Center and they are welcoming everyone in an Open House on February 13. Date and time: February 13, from 4:00-5:30Who can attend: It is open to the public. Everyone from the community is invited to attend. Event details: There will be a ribbon cutting, and people will be invited to take a tour of the newly renovated building. Attendees can also participate in a scavenger hunt and an activity on display in the center.

On September 23 LBCC welcomed students back with a fair in the courtyard where students could learn about clubs, discover resources offered, and meet instructors. This was followed by the student takeover put on by the Student Leadership Council featuring free food, games, and music. It was a great way to get connected and excited for the new school year. MORE THAN CREDIT — For the last few days with their host families, adventures, and classes the LBCC Costa Rica study abroad team was settled comfortably into their Tico life. On July 6, 2023, the group woke up early for a bird-watching hike with Olman Sisneros into the Curi-Cancha Reserve in Monteverde. Sisneros spent most of his life tracking native wild birds in the area and was quick to spot any within earshot.

Mornings are for adventure. While in Costa Rica at the Monte Verde Institute, the Study Abroad team from LBCC had the opportunity to learn more about the economy, values, culture, and landscape of Costa Rica. Organized by the Institute and led by Paola Rojas the team took advantage of the warm sunny mornings to explore. At the same time, the rainy afternoons were spent in Spanish and Costa Rican Literature classes. A full trip.

We Live Here NowOn June 27, 2023, the team found themselves in unfamiliar rooms and homes scattered around Monte Verde and Santa Elena. Each was greeted by their new host families and sat down for true Spanish immersion over breakfast. Most homes are nearly exclusively speaking Spanish. The members of the LBCC Costa Rica Study Abroad team are in varying levels of Spanish study, yet all are immersed in the language.
