Biya Simbassa has run only three marathons. His debut was solid: 2:10:34, which he ran in Prague in 2023. It showed he had potential in the event. His second effort was disappointing. He ran at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and raced too conservatively, thinking the leaders would come back to him on a hot day in Orlando, Florida. They never did, and Simbassa was 11th, in 2:12:21. Later that fall, Simbassa wanted to run the Chicago Marathon.

Casey Comber’s coach got the call from Millrose Games director Ray Flynn about a month before the meet: Meet organizers were looking for a pacer for Grant Fisher in the 3,000 meters. As Comber remembers it, they wanted someone to go through 2,000 meters in about 5 minutes even. Comber, who has a personal best of 3:51.92 for the mile, was game. “It looked like they were going to be going for the American record,” Comber said in a phone call with Runner’s World.

Yared Nuguse is now the proud owner of a world record, the first of his career. He ran 3:46.63 in the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York to break the indoor mark of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia five years ago. Nuguse had been sitting second on the all-time list behind Kejelcha since running the American indoor record of 3:47.31 two years ago. Nuguse collects a bonus of $25,000 for breaking the world record.

I've long been interested in the relationship between agents, athletes, and shoe companies. Then the Valby family came along and did their own thing. A few other veterans are representing themselves, too. Enjoyed working on this one (despite complaints). https://t.co/WiLvn8mydN
