    During Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s time in office, the legislature made six attempts to restructure election boards and take power away from him. It appears new Gov. Josh Stein’s experience won’t be any different. In late December, he was added to a 2023 lawsuit that originally challenged a now-repealed, previous attempt at taking away a governor’s power over election boards. The case is now in Wake County Superior Court. An eventual ruling could be appealed all the way up to the state Supreme Court.

    Election certification in a razor-thin race between Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin and state Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs, a Democrat,had been scheduled for Friday. But that’s apparently not going to happen.  The N.C. Supreme Court issued a temporary stay Tuesday afternoon, barring the State Board of Elections from certifying the election until the court decides on the merits of Griffin’s election protests.

    The fate of student voting in North Carolina may come down to how courts define one word: “card.” It’s one of several elections lawsuits before various North Carolina courts as litigation filed before Election Day 2024 continues into 2025. In the run-up to the 2024 general election, at least half a dozen lawsuits were filed against the State Board of Elections over various elections and voting issues. In most cases, courts issued temporary, preliminary rulings ahead of the election.
