The occasion also known as Whitsunday is a Christian observance that takes place 50 days after Easter. It has its origins in the Judaism tradition of the Festival of Weeks, but it also commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit onto Jesus’s apostles after his ascension into heaven. According to Acts 2 of the New Testament in the Bible, Jesus was resurrected after his crucifixion. The Bible says he spent 40 days with his apostles teaching them the word of God.

Race for Life is a series of fundraising events, organised by charity Cancer Research UK, that involve running, jogging or walking a five-kilometre, 10-kilometre or ‘Pretty Muddy’ course and raising sponsorship for doing so. The money goes towards cancer research in all 200 types of cancer. The series of events, including in Carlisle, as shown in our pictures, is open to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, with more than 150 Race for Life 5k challenges across the United Kingdom.

The day was was established in 1914 and was first celebrated in Monroe, Wisconsin, in the United States. For more than 100 years, it has been celebrated biennially and there are a multitude of different festivities that go on in Monroe. These have been known to include a two-hour parade, traditional Swiss-Germanic music (waltzes and polkas), club stands, crafts, carnival rides, restaurants, and local food to enjoy.
