When I first heard the premise of A Virtuous Business, I was reminded of the ’90s British comedy, The Full Monty, which follows the farcical adventures of six unemployed men who decide to form a Chippendale act to make money. When I first saw The Platform, I was struck by its elementality. Sometime in the near future, prisoners are kept in a vertical prison made of concrete slabs. Each day, a massive platform of food is lowered onto each level. Those on the upper levels feast to their heart’s content, while those on the lower level starve or eat their roommate.
