In the last two months of 2024, I felt myself changing—and not for the better. Optimism has never been my forte. Maybe that’s a product of watching too much news or growing up in the internet age where negativity is more potent than positivity. Lately that negative tendency has grown stronger, and when asked what I am looking forward to in 2025, I’ve struggled to come up with an answer.

In the days since the Presidential election, I’ve been thinking a lot about the film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. I can hear you now: Sarah, that’s a strange leap. Are you okay? The answer is of course not. When your core beliefs have been shaken, it’s easy to wonder if anything matters anymore, if anything will ever be okay again. In moments of deep heartache, loss, and disillusionment, I tend to seek answers in art. Our capacity for creativity is one of the best things about humanity.

One of the most pervasive messages in our society is the importance of love. With family, friends, and significant others. How to get it, cultivate it, tend to it over a lifetime, and cope when we lose it. We devote time to analyzing the languages with which we convey it—affirmation, acts of service, etc. Love, we are taught, means everything. Unless you are versed in the language of tennis. You try to hold your opponents to love, while hoping to escape its grasp yourself.

Last week, when Simone Biles stepped onto the floor of Paris’ Bercy Arena, she did so with the eyes of the world upon her. Of course, this is nothing novel for any gymnast competing on the ultimate international stage that is the Olympics, as they must perform incredible feats under the weight of their nation’s expectations. As the GOAT of gymnastics, the bar is raised for her already.
