Eating out in the Norwegian capital needn't break the bank. Mathallen. Picture: Sarah ReidBy Sarah ReidUpdated June 12, 2025, first published June 13, 2025I was a bit nervous about travelling to Oslo. As much as I was looking forward to exploring Norway's fjord-side capital during the blissfully long days of the northern European summer, I expected my travel budget to blow out in this notoriously expensive country. In the Australian state of New South Wales, Sarah Reid hits a long-awaited new trail that connects her to the world’s oldest and largest subtropical rainforest—in more ways than one. Dumping my 31lb (14-kilogram) pack and reaching down to unlace my muddy boots, my hiker’s high evaporates when I discover that the baby-blue lining of my left boot has turned scarlet red. Blood oozes from several bite marks on my ankle, but the culprits have absconded. There’s another bloodbath in my right boot.

This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK). As close to Broome, Australia as it is to Jakarta, it’s a hilly, sparsely developed island intersected by just two main roads — yet it’s 15 times the size of Singapore. Life here feels remote and detached.

Hugely disappointed by @VirginAustralia delaying my trip home from #Bali twice and telling me my 2 days of unexpected costs won’t be covered because it’s a ‘weather event’ - yet other airlines are flying on time (in clear skies). Fishy.
