I’ll be going LIVE on video to write alongside you tonight, Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 7:00-9:00 pm CT!Create-Along livestreams are intended to set aside time and hold space for you to connect with your creativity. I have a confession to make: I still struggle with perfectionism. I’ve read books about it. I’ve journaled about it. I’ve talked to therapists and other writers about it. I’ve even produceda bunchofWrite Nowpodcastepisodes on it. It should be easy to get rid of, right? I mean, I don’t want to be a perfectionist — it makes me hate myself and my work, slows me down, bogs me down with (unnecessary!) rewrites, and often stops me from moving forward entirely. It is a problem that I truly wish to solve.

Dear Creators,It seems simple enough — you grab a notebook, a pen, a laptop (or whatever it is you prefer to use), you sit down, and you write. “Just write!” is the advice I see most often — and have given myself, in the past. What could be simpler than a word on a page? But somewhere between our desire to create and the act of creating, things get a little more… complicated. We worry about failure. We realize we have too many ideas to choose from — or worse, none at all.

Dear Creators,Somewhere along the line, did you learn to never settle for less than your best? I did, and I’m not sure if I learned it through school-hallway posters, peppy children’s media, personal encouragement to realize my “full potential”, or simply the cultural zeitgeist of the early ‘90s — but I’ve definitely internalized it. In a way, I’m grateful. This mindset has helped me to push myself to learn, grow, and produce high-quality work that has made me a successful adult.

Welcome back to the Write Now podcast! This week, I’m talking about that Oliver Burkeman article that’s been making the rounds about the “70 Percent Rule”, and what it means for us to do our best β€” or, as he suggests, slightly less.
