Over the last two years, more and more “black-out” license plate tags have been popping up throughout the state of Mississippi. The trend ramped up after the passage of Senate Bill 2841 in 2023, which allowed for the generic use of the tag without any additional custom letters or words. Prior to that, the blackout option was only accessible to “vanity” tags, those with customized slogans. Since July of 2022, the state has sold more than 143,000 black-out car tags to residents of the state.

In the last days of the 2024 Legislative session, both the Medicaid expansion and Medicaid tech bills were killed, but a budget was adopted for the Division. The efforts for Medicaid expansion during the 2024 Legislative session came to an end last night after the death of the conference report on a filing deadline. Lawmakers in the House and Senate could not come to an agreement on how to expand Medicaid in Mississippi, with much of the negotiations hanging on a work requirement waiver.

Senator Wiggins told members on the Senate floor that the House chose not to do anything this year regarding judicial redistricting. Despite attempts to stay ahead of the deadline, this year’s judicial redistricting proposal (SB 2771) did not make it past the conference deadline during the 2024 legislative session. Circuit and Chancery court redistricting is required to be completed by the fifth year after a Census is taken. The cutoff for lawmakers to comply following the 2020 Census is 2025.

After a substantial amount of work, lawmakers were unable to agree on Medicaid expansion or a tech bill for this year. #msleg

As the 2024 session wraps, lawmakers worked hard on the issue of Medicaid. However, agreements could not be made, leaving much on the table for next year. https://t.co/tpB2fdErMn

This might be the best tweet of the year. Don't make me cry.

I hate to see @_SarahUlmer_ leave the Capitol Press Corps, but I’m excited for her as she starts a new chapter of her life. It may hurt or help my reputation for people to know we are actually good friends and keep each other informed with what’s happening at the Capitol. https://t.co/50YsHNHY5i
