    Two Lost SonsThe Bible’s most potent depiction of the truth that there’s more than one way to be lost is crystallized in Luke 15:11–32. The broad outline of the parable is familiar: a father has two sons, the younger of whom demands his share of the inheritance and then moves to a far country, where he squanders it on wild living. Eventually, after coming to his senses, the prodigal returns home empty-handed and broken; he simply hopes his father will take him back as a hired servant.

    Suffering. How can one small word hold so much complexity? It can elicit: fear, dread, anxiety, bitterness, anger, and panic. It can also stir up: courage, strength, growth, humility, and faith. Suffering is so painfully complex that we struggle to find answers to it, yet it demands answers nonetheless. Which is why, I believe, we often grasp at any answer we can surmise to make sense of our pain. God must want to teach me something. Maybe I’m being disciplined for unconfessed sin.

Children today are being raised in a society that perpetually tells them they are meant to be happy and that they should feel free to do whatever feels good to find that elusive happiness. Kids often look for that happiness in trying to be good enough. They tend to seek their purpose in trying to be the best—or at least better than those around them. Or perhaps they seek satisfaction through the coolest toys, best clothes, newest phones, or video games.
