The police force covering Rutland is one of the worst performing when it comes to criminal cases collapsing, a BBC investigation has found. Of 14,551 cases handed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) by Leicestershire Police between October 2022 and September last year, 384 were dropped due to lost or missing evidence.

Rutland's budget for the latest financial year came in with a small overspend, with less recycling, fewer staff and more money from interest payments all helping to balance the books. The final figures in the 2024/25 Rutland County Council budget have been counted and verified and a report to the cabinet that will be discussed next week shows that the authority was £148,000 over the £52million it had budgeted.

Reports into the winter flooding that hit Rutland in recent years are nearing completion. At last night's (May 22) full Rutland County Council meeting, cabinet member for environment, Christine Wise (Lib Dem) said the section 19 reports, which local authorities must complete after flooding incidents were moving on and almost complete. Areas of the county were badly affected when Storm Babet hit in October 2023 and when Storm Henk arrived three months later in January 2024.

Raised crime fears within a town led to a 'walkabout' visit by its police and crime commissioner. Concerns about potential money laundering, anti-social behaviour, drug running and the lack of a police presence were all raised at the recent annual town meeting in Uppingham. In response, elected crime commissioner Rupert Matthews went out with police officer George Pears to talk to businesses about retail crime.
