Julio Cortázar’s short story The Southern Thruway came rushing to mind when I read Martin Vrba’s writing on the ecological class. Certain stories, like old friends, are reliable, interpretative, candid. Conveyed in under thirty pages, Cortázar’s expansive narrative from 1966 about the tribulations of surviving in times of dire need persists.

From a European perspective, this US election was always going to be about more than watching from afar. Having witnessed Trump’s disastrous first-term foreign policy actions, even Europeans with their own de-democratizing ideas didn’t favour a rerun. Harris’s Democratic candidacy was more acceptable to many of Europe’s growing number of far-right voters – her right-leaning policies offering a steadier global economic progression in geopolitically unsettled times.

The bouquets are so fresh and abundant in Lviv’s Field of Mars that bees are foraging cut cornflower blooms. Walking the stretch of this improvised wartime burial site – an extension of the carpark near the inner-city Lychakiv Cemetery – I observe numerous mourners tending their loved ones’ graves amongst all the commemorative flags.

I will note at this point that I am an entrepreneur with big ideas, passion and a willingness to change my little part of the world. But can I sustain the energy, drive and commitment?
