    In 2019, Sarah Wildman’s daughter, Orli, was just 10 when she was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare form a liver cancer. Over the next few years, Wildman chronicled Orli’s illness for The New York Times, where she is a staff writer and editor for the Opinion section. Wildman’s articles detailed Orli’s bout with several rounds of chemo, a liver transplant, two brain surgeries and a tumor that pinched her spine, leaving her unable to walk. Orli died in March 2023, at the age of 14.

    By Sarah Wildman December 29, 2024( JTA) - WASHINGTON ( JTA) - Jimmy Carter, the one-term president who brokered the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt but earned pariah status in some corners of the Jewish community for his criticisms of Israel, has died. Carter, who had remained active into his final years despite a 2015 diagnosis of liver cancer, died Sunday at 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, his nonprofit announced.

    The first week of March 2022, I flew to Miami with my 13-year-old daughter, Orli; her 8-year-old sister, Hana; and my partner, Ian. We were, by all appearances, healthy. Robust, even. In reality, we were at the end of a reprieve. Orli's liver cancer had by then been assaulted by two years of treatments - chemotherapy, a liver transplant, more chemotherapy, seven surgeries. Now new metastases lit up a corner of one lung on scans, asymptomatic but foreboding.
