In a major ruling last week, the United States District Court of Columbia has found Google guilty of being a monopolist in the Search market as well as a subset of the digital advertising market. The Court ruled that Google was partaking in anticompetitive behaviour through its exclusive contracts with various devices and operating systems and other exclusionary practices that violated provisions of the US antitrust law.

A United States Court dismissed Stability AI and Midjourney’s motion to reject the artists’ copyright pleas, stating the nature of such cases depends on how the AI tools work along with their implementation by others. The Court has called for evidentiary basis testing of such cases.

On July 31, the Bombay High Court directed multiple AI platforms to remove all references to singer Arijit Singh’s name, image, voice, and other attributes, granting legal protection to the singer’s personality rights. The Court found that some of the 38 entities, including at least five AI platforms and John Does, gained commercially through ‘unauthorised exploitation’ of the actor’s name, image, voice, and other unique characteristics. This infringed on his personality or publicity rights.

The Bombay High Court directed YouTuber Shajan Skariah to delete one of his videos alleged to be defamatory towards Malabar Gold Limited from his channel ‘Marunadan Malayali’ on August 7. The Court directed Google to take down the video if Skariah fails to comply. Malabar Gold Limited alleged in a complaint that Skariah made several defamatory statements against the company in a video related to the termination of an ex-employee of the company, who had no connections with the YouTuber.
